I spent my formative years growing up a tomboy in Kansas City, KS. I was always chasing bugs, chasing hobbies, and chasing dreams. My parents encouraged my interests and provided me with resources to explore. One year my dad gave me a camera and I have been taking pictures ever since.
I studied photography at the University of California, Santa Cruz. After receiving my Bachelors Degree in Art in 1994, I traveled the country for a year working on a photojournalism project about women and creativity.
Since then I have switched from traditional black-and-white film photography to color digital. I have focused on finding beauty in things that go unnoticed. I have had a lot of fun photographing architectural details, flowers, and everyday objects.
Today I'm directing my attention to people who go unnoticed or whose beauty goes uncelebrated. With my new AND project, I hope to contribute to the growing visibility of queer masculinity.
I have been out as a butch lesbian for 20 years, and I'm still exploring my gender and my sexuality. I'm still learning about myself and learning to love myself. This project is needed. I need it and I hope it will mean something to you.
In my day job I enjoy a position as an Instructional Designer on the UC Berkeley campus. My home is also in Berkeley where I live with my wife Isobel and our daughter Norrie.
